Dot EU is two years old!

Two years ago, on April 7 2006, Europe's domain opened for all. Today, it totals more than 2.8 million registered names. According to the European commission, it's become a distinct European identity.

For a new domain, .EU has had a great run of success. It's already well within the world's top ten Internet extensions, a chart that's still dominated by .COM, where .DE remains the second largest and where, thanks to some rather opaque local promotions, .CN now ranks 4th.

Europe has pushed its .EU as a means of cementing the single market and strengthening its presence on the Internet. ".EU should now become the natural choice for everyone in Europe," says EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media Viviane Reding. "The stronger Europe's single market for telecommunications grows, the more we ought to ensure that .EU becomes more visible, secure and affordable."

The Commission claims an 80% renewal rate for .EU domain names, and the same percentage of actual use: i.e. 80% of .EU names are linked to a live website or email addresses.

Each member state's appetite for domain names in general is reflected in their .EU pick-up. Germany accounts for the most registrations at 31.4%, followed by the Netherlands (13.4%), the United Kingdom (13.3%), France (7.3%) and Italy (5.1%).

According to .EU registry EURid's General manager Marc Van Wesemael, the 2.8 million plus .EU domains are held by a million plus entities, individuals and companies.
